1/10 Fábio Cembranelli

1. What inspires you? It changes week by week: if I travel to another country, I want to portray its local colors and subjects, for example. Sometimes I start a specific flower series. Colors and blends in nature give me new ideas day by day.

2. Who inspires you? Lots of artists have influenced my work, I would nominate two: William Turner and Edward Seago.

3. Where's your favorite place to paint? It’s a mixing between plein air and atelier work. Sometimes I make a sketch on location, from life, and start painting at my studio. I like both, but sometimes it´s just easier to paint inside.

4. Which colors won't you miss on your palette? I use a limited palette, but Quinacridone Gold, Dragon's Blood, Quinacridone Red and Cobalt Blue are important colors for me. Warm colors are important in my work.

5. What's your favorite paper? Arches and Fontenay, by Canson.

6. What are your favorite brushes? I prefer flat brushes. Most of them are synthetic.

7. Which technique do you prefer the most? Painting watercolor in the wet-in-wet method allows colors to be laid into or over another while the paper is still wet or damp, creating a naturally diffused effect. That’s the way I feel most comfortable in portraying my own view of my subjects.

8. One watercolor secret for our readers? Think about the composition before start painting and don’t forget the plays between light/shadow and foreground/background.

9. Your tip for a beginner? Watercolor is a difficult medium, but you may keep painting and take advantage of your mistakes or learn from your mistakes. It’s a long journey so…be patient and humble at the same time.

10. May we see your studio?
